There’s Power In Your Past

How Looking back at your past can help you in your present.

When you look at this photo, you probably see a picture of me and my mom, in Yellowstone National Park. And while to you that may be all this is, but it is not to me.

This is not just a photo of my mom and me in one of the most beautiful parks in the US.

This is also not just a pic of me just hours after completing a half marathon.

So what is it?

This is a picture of me exactly 9 months after my ACL surgery, just hours after I completed a trail half marathon! If you don't run, just know that I trained for a road race, had no idea this was a trail run until showing up that day. A little intimidated, but I did it anyways.

For the rest of that day, (after a little rest and ice on my knee and ankle) we spent sightseeing and making memories.

So many people will tell you things like “don’t look backwards, that’s not where you’re going” or even one of my favorites is “there’s a reason the windshield is bigger than the rear view mirror”…all these people telling you to never look back. Well, what I have found is that sometimes it's good to look back. See where you came from, see where you are now, in order to remember what you are capable of. In the heart of a difficult time, it is easy to forget just how powerful we are, what we are able to accomplish. So if you are going through a hard time, maybe life isn’t meeting your expectations, or you’ve got a hard thing coming up in your future that is causing a fear response…LOOK BACK. Look back at the last time you felt a similar way, look back at what you have already overcome. Remember all the great things you have already done and remember who THAT person is…he/she are still YOU!

This is your reminder that it’s okay to look back. See all the difficult days you’ve experienced and survived even when you thought you wouldn’t. One day, you’ll look back at today and think the same thing.

I can tell you that every time I see this photo, I am reminded of who I am, and what I am capable of.
